Battle of Britain

REVIEWED BY: The Naked Kiss Posted on 21/04/2011

For the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain brothers Ewan and Colin McGregor present this ninety minute special that focuses on the events of the Battle of Britain and their love for planes.

The film deals with two subjects – the time-line, history and events of the battle and Colin being an R.A.F pilot with a childhood dream of flying a Spitfire.

Colin is an R.A.F veteran who during the special gets to fly some of the old-school planes that were used during the Battle of Britain. His ultimate dream is to fly a Spitfire, but before he can he has to undergo some training. He first flies a Tiger Moth (the first craft all pilots first trained in), progresses to a Harvard plane and finally the Spitfire. Colin also lets Ewan take his seat in a Spitfire flying in a formation of planes.

Aside from the brothers flying and looking at planes the brothers narrate the time-line of events and the build up to the battle. There's interviews with pilots who fought during the battle and the brothers also look at some of the equipment, buildings and planes that were used during the battle. The film utilizes stock footage, photos and interviews with specialists to paint a picture of the events.

I'd recommend renting this DVD as it's not a thorough or complete history on the Battle of Britain. Although it's interesting to see former Spitfire pilots talk about their time in the air the brothers' gushing over planes can deter from the real point of the DVD – it is called “The Battle of Britain” y'know guys! I'm sure Ewan's status will entice a few people into buying this DVD but if you're a war aficionado I'd advise renting it as the film does contain a lot of material of the two brothers potting round airfields, flying planes and although they are having a great time it doesn't translate that well to the viewer and can become a bit boring for those who are more interested in hearing about the battle.
